The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide credit reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. The FCRA promotes the accuracy and privacy of information in the files of the nation’s credit reporting companies. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the FCRA with respect to credit reporting companies.
You can space those 3 reports throughout the year to have your own free “credit monitoring program”.
There are 3 ways to request your free annual credit report from each agency:
- On the web: annualcreditreport.com
- Over the Phone: 1-877-322-8228
- By Mail: complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to:
Annual Credit Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
Do not contact credit reporting agencies directly. They will provide free report only by one of the ways mentioned above.
A Warning about “Imposter” Websites:
Only one website is authorized to fill orders for the free annual credit report you are entitled to under law — annualcreditreport.com. Other websites that claim to offer “free credit reports,” “free credit scores,” or “free credit monitoring” are not part of the legally mandated free annual credit report program.
For more information about Free Annual Credit Report program see FTC site: http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0155-free-credit-reports
